We reviewed the North Face Big Shot Backpack. With its style, versatility & functionality, it’s among the best everyday, on-the-go backpacks there is.

As far as versatile, everyday backpacks go, The North Face Big Shot is among the best. North Face backpacks are renowned for their killer style and functional design. To learn more about the Big Shot, keep reading.

The North Face hit the scene in 1968 with their innovative technical mountaineering equipment and apparel. Since then, the company’s selection of outstanding products has only grown more diverse. Today, The North Face offers everything from celebrated ski- and outerwear to packs, tents, sleeping bags and performance apparel.

The Big Shot, like its name suggests, gives you a ton of room—over 2,000 cubic inches. Whether you’re toting books, a laptop and other school supplies or you’re wearing it while out skiing, it’ll hold everything you need it to and still provide a comfortable fit.

Overview of The North Face Big Shot Backpack

Like other North Face packs such as the Recon, the Big Shot is incredibly versatile. It makes a great campus tote bag that will get you through high school or college, but it’s still in its element on a trail or mountain.

Spacious, ergonomic and loaded with features, the Big Shot backpack is ideal for a day hike, a bike ride or a little night skiing. Make it your travel companion for bumming around Europe for a couple of weeks or for a quick cross-country flight.

The Big Shot isn’t made for hardcore backpacking or mountaineering, but it’s suitable for just about anything else.

Advantages

Check out some of the Big Shot’s organizational features:

Spacious main compartment with an organizer and a special sleeve made for laptops up to 17″

Front, vertical zip pockets, perfect for quickly stashing smaller items

Two side mesh stretch pockets for water bottles

Fill the bag up with your things, but don’t stop there. The bag features bottom compression straps for tying on a sleeping bag or pad. You can also take advantage of the vertical daisy chain loops running down the front, perfect for hooking up other necessary gear.

There’s also a built-in hydration port/clip so you can install a reservoir (sold separately) and stay refreshed that way.

In terms of comfort, the Big Shot is no ordinary backpack. It features a padded back panel for extra sturdiness and support. The FlexVent™ injection-molded shoulder straps keep the pack comfortable even when loaded down, while the stowable hipbelt and sternum strap help to maintain stability.

Disadvantages

Retailing for about $109, the Big Shot is not the most affordable everyday backpack. Considering all it offers, it’s worth the asking price.

The Big Shot, like the North Face Jester, simply isn’t made for back country outings. You’ll need something else to carry into the wilderness.

Summary

Despite its very minor limitations, the Big Shot is a great pack. If you’ve come to know and appreciate the quality, design and performance of The North Face, this pack will not disappoint.

Ideally suited for day hikes along a trail, a bit of travel or even as a school book bag, the Kelty Redwing 50 is one of several Redwing styles made for men and women. The others, the 40 and 44, differ by capacity, dimensions, weight and torso fit. Our review of this sporty, mid-performance pack should provide you with everything you need to know about it.

Since 1952, Kelty packs have helped mountaineers and backpackers load up and get to their destination. Known for their reliability, comfort and affordability, Kelty has long been a mainstay in the industry, the preferred choice of experienced climbers and first-timers alike.

Designed to sit comfortably on your shoulders as you lug a load while distributing the weight evenly, the Redwing 50 is a versatile pack that’s at home in an urban environment as well as under a canopy of trees.

The Kelty Redwing Backpack: Overview

With over 3,000 cubic inches of internal space, the Redwing 50 is the largest pack in this series. Priced at about $109, it makes a great everyday pack and an above-average overnighter.

The padded shoulders straps are anatomically curved for more comfortable wearing, and the removable hipbelt with the patented Scherer Cinch™ is built to hug your waist and adjust with ease, even while on the go.

The mesh-lined back panel wicks away moisture and helps keep your back ventilated, even when you’re out in the heat of summer. The pack is not made for extensive multi-day hikes, though. Consider the Kelty Red Cloud for your longer outdoor adventures.

Kelty Redwing Advantages

Take a look at some of the Redwing’s standard pack bag features:

Spacious, 2,500 to 3,100-cubic inch capacity (depending on model), with panel-loading convenience and built-in hydro sleeve and tube port (reservoir sold separately)

Five exterior pockets including a small item organizer and easy-to-access stash pockets

Daisy chain and gear loop for attaching tools

Four compression straps on the side for cinching down a load

Similar to other Kelty packs like the Coyote 80, the Redwing is made from super-durable, reinforced ripstop polyester, so snags, stones and scree, look out!

Kelty Redwing Disadvantages

The Redwing 50 lacks the conventional upright pack design. This limits its effectiveness on trips that last any longer than two, maybe three days.

It also lacks the superior suspension system of a true backpacking pack, so it’s not going to maintain long-distance comfort. Moreover, the bulky exterior pockets jut out to the sides, increasing lateral weight and instability.

Kelty Redwing: Summary

If you’re looking for a reliable, well-built backpack that holds up in the great outdoors but doesn’t look out of place in the city, the Kelty Redwing 50 backpack is a smart choice. Go smaller with the Redwing 44, and for women there’s the Redwing 40 with its gender-specific suspension.

All in all, the pack is a sensible, incredibly versatile carryall.

The Osprey Atmos 65 Backpack is great for everything from weekend outings to multi-day thru hikes. Find out what we think about this pack in our review.

Lightweight, ventilated and comfortable—this is how we would describe the Osprey Atmos 65 backpack. And it is totally adjustable for an essentially customized fit!

Always innovating, Osprey offers meticulously designed packs continually updated to meet the needs of their loyal customers. Osprey backpacks are made for day hikes, overnights, backpacking, adventure sports and extreme mountaineering. The company’s been going strong for over 35 years and still keeps climbing.

Osprey Atmos 65: Overview

Lighter and less spacious than the Osprey Aether 85, the Atmos 65 is no slouch. Its super-light frame packs down tight thanks to its side compression straps, bringing its center of gravity closer to your body.

Some features immediately stand out:

Internal hydration system sleeve with reservoir clip (reservoir sold separately)

Stow-on-the-Go™ setup for quick trekking pole attachment

A great selection of woven, stretch and zippered pockets for organization and convenience

At about $240, this bag is a real steal. The previous year’s model is nearly identical, and you can often find it at a discount. For women, Osprey offers the corresponding Aura Series.

Advantages

Adaptability is key. The Atmos 65 has an adjustable shoulder harness, torso length, and hipbelt, while the Fit-On-The-Fly™ design gives you a full six-inch adjustment range while you’re moving.

The AirSpeed™ suspension system with LightWire™ frame, 3D-tensioned back panel and foam hipbelt optimize pack balance and weight distribution, while the spacer mesh between your back and the panel literally keeps air circulating through, even on the hottest days.

At the bottom of the pack is a designated sleeping bag compartment with removable sleeping pad straps on the exterior. There are also tool attachment points, great for tying down an ice axe, and the bag features numerous exterior pockets, making for easier access.

Disadvantages

Anyone with a large torso circumference might experience an awkward fit. You might be better off with something comparable offered in an extra-large size.

Summary

This sporty backpack provides the very best in comfort, stability, ventilation and space for its size. Designed to adjust to the specific shape and contours of your body, even when loaded down the Atmos 65 won’t drag you down.

The price is right, and the technology is precise, making this innovative backpack a true outdoor Wunderkind.

When first introduced, the Osprey Atmos Series of hiking packs instantly turned heads and attracted devotees. Check out our review to find out why.

Ahead of the curve in terms of comfort, ventilation and its lightweight design, this season’s Osprey Atmos backpacks feature a suspension system that’s been tweaked just enough to add more customization options for a superb fit. Otherwise, what has been working has been left well enough alone.

Known for its innovative, amazingly comfortable backpacks, Osprey packs have been strapped to adventurous backs since the mid 1970s. Relationships are important to this company—between designers, staff, manufacturers and customers and, most importantly, between you and the pack you’ve chosen to wear.

Keep reading for a great overview of Atmos Series packs, or check out review of the Osprey Atmos 65 for a more in-depth look.

Our Osprey Atmos Review

Costing $199 and $239, respectively, the Atmos 50 and 65 backpacks have redefined custom comfort out on the trail for a very reasonable price.

Check out these amazing structural features:

Updated AirSpeed™ suspension system with adjustable torso length, hipbelt and interchangeable harnesses

LightWire™ frame with suspended mesh back panel, delivering optimal ventilation and weight support

If the packs have an advantage in terms of their design, then their performance features put them over the top.

Advantages

Atmos packs are designed to hold a hydration system reservoir (sold separately) and feature dual tube exit ports.

There are eight, count ‘em, eight exterior pockets, including a floating top lid, several stretch mesh pockets and super-convenient hipbelt pockets. The pack also provides a designated sleeping bag compartment and removable exterior sleeping pad straps.

The Stow-on-to-Go™ system lets you quickly attach trekking poles, while the gear loops and bungee tie-offs give you a place to secure technical tools and other objects.

The shoulder harness adjusts by a total of three inches, and the hipbelt adjusts a total of six inches for exceptional on-the-go adaptability.

Disadvantages

The Atmos 65 tops out at a 4,150 cubic-inch capacity. This isn’t exactly a disadvantage, but there are bigger packs out there, such as the Osprey Aether 85.

Summary

Like the corresponding Aura Series packs for women, the newly fashioned Atmos Series for men represents another exceptional outdoor line from Osprey.

If you’re looking to go light, you can’t do better than the Osprey Atmos 50 or 65. Don’t be fooled by the feather-lite pack. It rocks in terms of spaciousness, versatility and, as we’ve come to expect from this company, total comfort.

A creative, lightweight design makes the Osprey Aether backpack a popular choice for all backpackers. Read our Aether reviews to learn why we love this pack!

The lineup of Osprey Aether backpacks includes the 60, 70 and 85. Now in their third generation, Aether packs are practical, feature a sleek, clean design and provide an exemplary custom fit for men.

From 1974 on, Osprey has made some of the world’s best, most innovative adventure backpacks. The company’s commitment to excellence extends from the products it makes to its pledge of environmental stewardship. In terms of comfort, versatility and incredible performance, you will not find a better backpack for the money.

Keep reading for a great overview of all Aether backpacks. For a closer look at the Aether 85, go here. If you’re looking for a smaller pack, check out the Aether 60. For women, Osprey offers the Ariel Series, identical to the Aether but with a woman-specific design.

Aether Backpack Overview

Available in three torso sizes, the hipbelt and harness come in four sizes each, letting you customize your Aether pack further. Plus, the pack’s removable IsoForm CM™ hipbelt is custom moldable, meaning it can be heated and formed specifically to the curves of your body.

Key features common to Aether packs:

LightWire™ metal alloy frame/suspension system with ribbed, foam panel and HDPE framesheet

IsoForm™ harness with no sewn seams and four-inch adjustable yoke

AddOns™ cord loops for easy attachment of Daylite or Solo daypack

Advantages

Perhaps the biggest advantage of Aether packs is the custom fit. The three pack sizes plus the different hipbelt and harness sizes combine for a wide fitting range.

The packs are easy to load and access, from the main J-zipper panel on the back to the removable top lid and the bottom sleeping bag compartment.

Multiple slots, gear loops, straps and the Stow on the Go™ feature make it easy to attach trekking poles, technical tools, a sleeping pad and more.

The internal and external compression straps let you cinch and secure the load, keeping its center of gravity closer to your back and improving overall comfort and stability.

Disadvantages

About the only cause for concern are the exterior pockets. The stretch-woven pockets on either side aren’t terribly easy to reach when hiking, making the top lid your best bet for on-the-go access.

Osprey Aether: Summary

Priced from $249 to $299, Osprey Aether backpacks are a bargain, especially when you consider the cost of a rival model like the Gregory Denali Pro.

With the Aether Series, you get the very best in comfort, performance and custom-fitting support. You’ll find Aether packs easy to load, with a ton of room for all of the essentials. And once you’ve mounted up, you’ll appreciate its body-sculpting fit and streamlined profile.

Need a pack that’s comfortable, provides no-hassle access and hauls a hefty load? Then read our Osprey Aether 60 review & learn why this backpack is perfect

The new Osprey Aether 60 pack offers a lightweight, mountaineering design, custom moldable hipbelt and a streamlined profile for backcountry pursuits!

Osprey backpacks are renowned for their intuitive designs, all-day comfort and high-performance versatility. Since 1974, the company has designed killer backpacks, relying on innovation and a technological edge to outfit adventurers with great-fitting gear.

The Aether line of Osprey backpacks is ideal for weekend and extreme backpackers alike. Find out more about the Aether 60 below.

Overview of the Osprey Aether 60 Backpack

Before we get into the real nitty-gritty, here are a few standout features of the Osprey Aether 60:

AddOn™ compatibility lets you attach a Daylite or Solo daypack using the special cord loops

Hydration system compatibility for easy access to water

Removable top pocket/lumbar pack

What really gives this pack its custom fit is the removable IsoForm CM™ hipbelt. Its dual-density 3D foam and anatomically designed shape really hug your body while providing incredible load support. The “CM” means custom moldable to the exact shape of your waist. Ask your retailer if they have a custom molding oven.

Advantages

The superb LightWire™ suspension supports a lot of weight comfortably, while the internal and external compression straps really let you cinch it down, so your stuff stays close without pulling on your center of gravity.

Like the other Osprey Aether backpacks, there are loops, slots and straps for securing trekking poles, a sleeping pad, an ice axe and other tools.

The four exterior pockets can be reached while on the go, including stretch-woven pockets on each side and a top lid. Main bag loading and access is made easier with the J-zipper panel, while the designated sleeping bag area provides a convenient place to stash your bedding.

Osprey Aether 60 Disadvantages

We’re not accustomed to speaking ill of Osprey packs. The Aether 60 is no exception. At $249 it’s a steal, but the three exterior pockets (besides the top lid, which is easy to access) are moderately inconvenient. If you like to keep tools, snacks and other small items handy while you hike, they’re best stored above your head in the top lid where they might jostle around as you move.

Summary

A true staple for all outdoor hiking adventures, whether overnight or for a week, the Aether 60 backpack from Osprey is built light, streamlined for stability, and is exceptionally spacious despite its smaller capacity.

Given the three size options and the custom-moldable hipbelt, you’ll walk away from the purchase with a perfectly fitting pack that feels like it was made exactly for you, and in many ways it was.

Want something a bit more spacious? Make sure you’re sitting down and check out our review of the Osprey Aether 85.

The Osprey Waypoint backpack delivers the support of a backcountry pack with travel-friendly features for globe-wide treks! Read our review to learn more.

An ideal convertible bag, the Osprey Waypoint 85 for men and women serves as your main travel pack but can be used for day-hiking or even overnighting.

Long known as a manufacturer of stellar technical backpacking packs, Osprey hasn’t overlooked the travel pack market. Offering durable, exceptionally comfortable packs that are heralded for their incredible suspension systems and come loaded with performance features, Osprey backpacks are in a class all their own.

Considering the bag works both as a lightweight piece of luggage and an outdoor tote, the $279 you’ll pay for this pack is not asking too much.

Overview of the Osprey Waypoint 85

The Waypoint 85 takes many of Osprey’s innovative features, such as those found on the Atmos 65, and bundles them up into a compact traveler, making this a truly versatile pack—a certifiable transformer. Wear it like a backpack, or stow the zip-away suspension neatly in its own panel and use the top or side handle to carry it like luggage.

And then there’s the removable daypack which is a marvel in itself. Here’s what it offers at first glance:

Supportive framesheet

Shoulder straps that tuck away

Mesh spacer back panel for great ventilation

The main pack features Osprey’s AirScape™ back panel and LightWire™ frame designed to breathe and keep your back from getting drenched with sweat on hot days.

Advantages

When used as an outdoor adventure pack, take advantage of the Waypoint’s sleeping pad straps, side lash points for extra gear and two ice axe loops. How many other “travel” bags offer that?

The main bag features interior organizational pockets, compression straps to really tie gear down and zippers that lock for added security.

The ErgoPull™ hipbelt closure system uses dual, top and bottom straps to tighten the belt around your waist, rather than a single center strap. This is a great design feature that relieves pressure on your hips.

Finally, the daypack features plenty of pockets for small items like a passport or camera, plus a spacious main area.

Disadvantages

Even the smallest Waypoint 85 model is likely too big to carry on board a plane. Try as you might, it’s not going to squeeze into an overhead compartment.

Osprey Waypoint 85 Travel Pack: Summary

While this is no hardcore backpacking pack (look here if you want one of those), the Waypoint 85 for men and women is perfect for loading up, heading to some exotic locale and exploring your surroundings.

The pack is lightweight, spacious, incredibly versatile and bound to please the wayward globetrotter in anyone.

Read our Osprey Stratos backpack review to learn why this light & fast daypack is ideal for all high energy, outdoor activities.

Available in several different sizes depending on your build and gear-toting needs, the Osprey Stratos Series of backpacks for men (and the corresponding, women-specific Sirrus Series) are made for day hiking, mountain biking, trail running, bouldering and other fast-paced activities.

Osprey has been a leading adventure backpack innovator for over 35 years. Offering everything from travel bags and high-performance hip packs to technical backpacks, the company prides itself on the custom comfort, quality and technological savvy of its outdoor products.

Want to take a closer look at the Stratos Series? Then read on, Adventurer!

The Osprey Stratos Backpack: Overview

The Stratos Series includes the 24, 26, 34 and 36. Like all Osprey backpacks, you can choose the right size for your needs.

Priced from about $99 to $139, the Stratos is a low-cost pack that really packs a wallop in terms of features, on-the-go comfort, and energized performance.

Here are just a few of the features:

Sewn-in hydration port and internal sleeve

AirSpeed™ suspension system with ventilated, 3D-tensioned mesh back panel

Stow on the Go™ attachment for trekking poles

ErgoPull™ hipbelt closure with dual straps to reduce pressure

LightWire™ alloy frame

We’ve checked ‘em out, and there are really no negative attributes to harp on. So let’s take a closer look at what these high-performance sport backpacks are made of.

Advantages

Stratos packs come with an integrated rain cover that tucks out of sight when not in use. There are numerous places to stash stuff on the exterior, including top slash, dual side and dual hipbelt pockets, while the large front panel makes it easy to access the main compartment.

Use the tool attachment for hauling an ice axe or other technical tool, and the side compression straps lock down longer items stored in the side pockets.

Like the Aether Series and other Osprey backpacks, Stratos models feature contoured shoulder straps and hipbelts for optimal comfort.

Disadvantages

It’s hard to be critical when we like something so much. One thing: the Stratos is not for backpacking. These sporty, lightweight packs are made for day excursions, so load up what you need and get moving.

Summary

Similar to the Osprey Talon Series, Stratos packs go fast and light. Available in several sizes and coming in a variety of sporty colors, the day hiking totes are sleek, hard-wearing and exceedingly comfortable.

Great for stashing your lunch, water, coat, camera and other essentials while you run, bike, do some light climbing, Stratos backpacks will neither slow you down nor stand in your way as you move through your adventure.

The Osprey Talon Series consists of six different styles, ranging from waist-mounted lumbar packs to full-size backpacks. Read our Talon reviews to learn more.

This series is made for fast-paced outdoor activities, whether you’re out for a run along a trail or doing some light technical climbing.

For over 35 years Osprey has been in the high-performance backpack business. Always innovating, the company produces some of the most outstanding backpacking, mountaineering, day hiking and adventure sport packs. Known for their comfort, durability and user-friendly features, Osprey backpacks are meticulously designed to fully optimize your outdoor experience.

If you’re looking for a lightweight pack for an overnight outing or a waistpack to comfortably hold a few things for a day, the Talon Series has you covered.

Overview of the Osprey Talon Backpack Series

Light, active and multi-use to the core, the Talon 44, 33, 22, 11, 8 and 4 give you the space to take along what you need when you don’t need to take a lot.

The Talon 44 works for lightweight backpacking (limited to 1-2 nights), while the 33 is specifically designed as a single night backpack. As the styles get smaller, they work best for adventure racing, trail running, cross-country skiing, day hiking and mountain biking.

And finally, at the smallest end is the Talon 4 and 8 waistpacks. These are for bare-bones hikes when you don’t need much more than a poncho, a couple of water bottles and your car keys.

Design features of the Osprey Talon series that we particularly like include:

Molded,AirScape™ back panel for comfort and breathability

Biostretch™ torso-adjustable harness for a great fit

ErgoPull™ dual-cord hipbelt closure for reduced pressure

Advantages

Talon Series backpacks are built for comfort, ventilation and high-performance accessibility. With up to six exterior pockets, including two each on the shoulder straps and hipbelt, you should never have trouble getting to small items.

The four backpacks are hydration system compatible, giving you easy, hands-free access to a water reservoir (sold separately).

They also feature reflective elements for high visibility and a blinker patch (blinker sold separately) for nighttime use.

Disadvantages

If you’re going on a long hike, go bigger with a pack like the Osprey Aether 85 or the newer Atmos 65. The bigger Talon Series packs will get you through any all-day activity and some multi-day treks, but they’re not made for hardcore mountaineering or extended excursions.

Also, we think there are other waistpacks on the market better than the Osprey Talon 4 and 8. They’re spacious and good for casual hiking, but nothing too fast-paced. Especially considering the price.

Summary

Priced from $89 to $149, Osprey Talon Series backpacks are a great pickup for the money. In our opinion, if you’re looking for a lightweight day-hike, climbing or adventure sport pack, you can’t really go wrong with the Talon 33 or 44.

At $59 and $69, respectively, the Talon 4 and 8 give you room for two big water bottles, but we’d recommend something by the North Face or CamelBak.

Consumer Reviews

People generally love the Talon backpacks. The waistpacks, however, aren’t always up to snuff for hardcore trail runners, some of whom find them to restrict movement.

Great for day hikes, overnights, fair-weather climbing, cragging and other activities, the Osprey Talon 44 backpack is slim, super light and super awesome!

The Osprey Talon 44 Backpack: Overview

While not the most spacious backpack under the sun, the Talon 44 is plenty big enough for day trips and overnights.

Planning on scaling Half Dome or doing a little big wall climbing in the high summer? Try bringing this puppy along for the ride.

Check out a few of the 44′s features, common to many Osprey backpacks:

ErgoPull™ hipbelt closure uses dual high and low straps to reduce pressure

Stow on the Go™ attachment for strapping on trekking poles

Hydration system compartment (reservoir sold separately) accessible from outside

Before we go any further, know that this bag isn’t for long backpacking trips.

The Talon 44 is designed for short, overnight adventures and mountaineering. And for that, there is scarcely a better bag on the planet for the price (about $150).

Learn More About the Talon 44

Advantages

Minimalist by design, the Talon 44 is nonetheless loaded with features. It packs easily from the top, has a removable lid and a lower zip pocket for a sleeping bag.

Numerous pockets dot the exterior. You’ll find mesh stretch pockets on the front and side, two on the shoulder pads and on the hipbelt as well, making small items incredibly easy to access. And if you’ve read any of our backpack reviews, you’ll know how much we value internal and external organization. For a small, lightweight backpack, Osprey did this baby right!

In terms of comfort, the perforated mesh shoulder straps are soft and breathable, while the lightweight AirScape™ back panel also helps your body stay cool.

The Biostretch™ harness adjusts to fit torsos of different length, and the compression straps on the sides cinch gear down tight to keep it from shaking around.

Bungee tie-offs, gear loops for ropes or tools, reflective accents and a designated patch for easy attachment of a blinker help to fill out this pack’s rich, versatile design.

Disadvantages

As mentioned, this bag simply doesn’t have the space for longer backpacking trips. If you’re hitting a longer stretch of the Pacific Coast Trail or going back country in Yellowstone, go with something bigger and meatier like the Osprey Aether 85.

Learn More About the Talon 44

Summary

The Talon 44 is the biggest in the Talon Series, but still remains a lightweight option that’s ideally suited to fast-paced adventuring while still providing plenty of space. If you like the Talon but need something a little lighter and smaller, then check out our other Osprey Talon backpack reviews.

This is a killer backpack for the money. It might not be the only backpack in your outdoor arsenal, but it’s perfect for hitting the outdoors on a moment’s notice.
