The Big Shot, like its name suggests, gives you a ton of room—over 2,000 cubic inches. Whether you’re toting books, a laptop and other school supplies or you’re wearing it while out skiing, it’ll hold everything you need it to and still provide a comfortable fit.

Overview of The North Face Big Shot Backpack

Like other North Face packs such as the Recon, the Big Shot is incredibly versatile. It makes a great campus tote bag that will get you through high school or college, but it’s still in its element on a trail or mountain.

Spacious, ergonomic and loaded with features, the Big Shot backpack is ideal for a day hike, a bike ride or a little night skiing. Make it your travel companion for bumming around Europe for a couple of weeks or for a quick cross-country flight.

The Big Shot isn’t made for hardcore backpacking or mountaineering, but it’s suitable for just about anything else.

Advantages

Check out some of the Big Shot’s organizational features:

  • Spacious main compartment with an organizer and a special sleeve made for laptops up to 17″
  • Front, vertical zip pockets, perfect for quickly stashing smaller items
  • Two side mesh stretch pockets for water bottles

Fill the bag up with your things, but don’t stop there. The bag features bottom compression straps for tying on a sleeping bag or pad. You can also take advantage of the vertical daisy chain loops running down the front, perfect for hooking up other necessary gear.

There’s also a built-in hydration port/clip so you can install a reservoir (sold separately) and stay refreshed that way.

In terms of comfort, the Big Shot is no ordinary backpack. It features a padded back panel for extra sturdiness and support. The FlexVent™ injection-molded shoulder straps keep the pack comfortable even when loaded down, while the stowable hipbelt and sternum strap help to maintain stability.

Disadvantages

Retailing for about $109, the Big Shot is not the most affordable everyday backpack. Considering all it offers, it’s worth the asking price.

The Big Shot, like the North Face Jester, simply isn’t made for back country outings. You’ll need something else to carry into the wilderness.

Summary

Despite its very minor limitations, the Big Shot is a great pack. If you’ve come to know and appreciate the quality, design and performance of The North Face, this pack will not disappoint.

Kelty Redwing Advantages

Kelty Redwing Disadvantages

The Redwing 50 lacks the conventional upright pack design. This limits its effectiveness on trips that last any longer than two, maybe three days.

It also lacks the superior suspension system of a true backpacking pack, so it’s not going to maintain long-distance comfort. Moreover, the bulky exterior pockets jut out to the sides, increasing lateral weight and instability.

Kelty Redwing: Summary

If you’re looking for a reliable, well-built backpack that holds up in the great outdoors but doesn’t look out of place in the city, the Kelty Redwing 50 backpack is a smart choice.  Go smaller with the Redwing 44, and for women there’s the Redwing 40 with its gender-specific suspension.

All in all, the pack is a sensible, incredibly versatile carryall.

The AirSpeed™ suspension system with LightWire™ frame, 3D-tensioned back panel and foam hipbelt optimize pack balance and weight distribution, while the spacer mesh between your back and the panel literally keeps air circulating through, even on the hottest days.

At the bottom of the pack is a designated sleeping bag compartment with removable sleeping pad straps on the exterior. There are also tool attachment points, great for tying down an ice axe, and the bag features numerous exterior pockets, making for easier access.

Disadvantages

Anyone with a large torso circumference might experience an awkward fit. You might be better off with something comparable offered in an extra-large size.

Costing $199 and $239, respectively, the Atmos 50 and 65 backpacks have redefined custom comfort out on the trail for a very reasonable price.

Check out these amazing structural features:

  • LightWire™ frame with suspended mesh back panel, delivering optimal ventilation and weight support

If the packs have an advantage in terms of their design, then their performance features put them over the top.

Advantages

Atmos packs are designed to hold a hydration system reservoir (sold separately) and feature dual tube exit ports.

There are eight, count ‘em, eight exterior pockets, including a floating top lid, several stretch mesh pockets and super-convenient hipbelt pockets. The pack also provides a designated sleeping bag compartment and removable exterior sleeping pad straps.

The Stow-on-to-Go™ system lets you quickly attach trekking poles, while the gear loops and bungee tie-offs give you a place to secure technical tools and other objects.

The shoulder harness adjusts by a total of three inches, and the hipbelt adjusts a total of six inches for exceptional on-the-go adaptability.

Disadvantages

The Atmos 65 tops out at a 4,150 cubic-inch capacity. This isn’t exactly a disadvantage, but there are bigger packs out there, such as the Osprey Aether 85.

Summary

Like the corresponding Aura Series packs for women, the newly fashioned Atmos Series for men represents another exceptional outdoor line from Osprey.

If you’re looking to go light, you can’t do better than the Osprey Atmos 50 or 65. Don’t be fooled by the feather-lite pack. It rocks in terms of spaciousness, versatility and, as we’ve come to expect from this company, total comfort.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of Aether packs is the custom fit. The three pack sizes plus the different hipbelt and harness sizes combine for a wide fitting range.

The packs are easy to load and access, from the main J-zipper panel on the back to the removable top lid and the bottom sleeping bag compartment.

Multiple slots, gear loops, straps and the Stow on the Go™ feature make it easy to attach trekking poles, technical tools, a sleeping pad and more.

The internal and external compression straps let you cinch and secure the load, keeping its center of gravity closer to your back and improving overall comfort and stability.

Disadvantages

About the only cause for concern are the exterior pockets. The stretch-woven pockets on either side aren’t terribly easy to reach when hiking, making the top lid your best bet for on-the-go access.

Osprey Aether 60 Disadvantages

We’re not accustomed to speaking ill of Osprey packs. The Aether 60 is no exception. At $249 it’s a steal, but the three exterior pockets (besides the top lid, which is easy to access) are moderately inconvenient. If you like to keep tools, snacks and other small items handy while you hike, they’re best stored above your head in the top lid where they might jostle around as you move.

Summary

A true staple for all outdoor hiking adventures, whether overnight or for a week, the Aether 60 backpack from Osprey is built light, streamlined for stability, and is exceptionally spacious despite its smaller capacity.

Given the three size options and the custom-moldable hipbelt, you’ll walk away from the purchase with a perfectly fitting pack that feels like it was made exactly for you, and in many ways it was.

Wear it like a backpack, or stow the zip-away suspension neatly in its own panel and use the top or side handle to carry it like luggage.

Advantages

When used as an outdoor adventure pack, take advantage of the Waypoint’s sleeping pad straps, side lash points for extra gear and two ice axe loops. How many other “travel” bags offer that?

The main bag features interior organizational pockets, compression straps to really tie gear down and zippers that lock for added security.

The ErgoPull™ hipbelt closure system uses dual, top and bottom straps to tighten the belt around your waist, rather than a single center strap. This is a great design feature that relieves pressure on your hips.

Finally, the daypack features plenty of pockets for small items like a passport or camera, plus a spacious main area.

Disadvantages

Even the smallest Waypoint 85 model is likely too big to carry on board a plane. Try as you might, it’s not going to squeeze into an overhead compartment.

Advantages

Stratos packs come with an integrated rain cover that tucks out of sight when not in use. There are numerous places to stash stuff on the exterior, including top slash, dual side and dual hipbelt pockets, while the large front panel makes it easy to access the main compartment.

Use the tool attachment for hauling an ice axe or other technical tool, and the side compression straps lock down longer items stored in the side pockets.

Like the Aether Series and other Osprey backpacks, Stratos models feature contoured shoulder straps and hipbelts for optimal comfort.

Disadvantages

It’s hard to be critical when we like something so much. One thing: the Stratos is not for backpacking. These sporty, lightweight packs are made for day excursions, so load up what you need and get moving.

Overview of the Osprey Talon Backpack Series

Light, active and multi-use to the core, the Talon 44, 33, 22, 11, 8 and 4 give you the space to take along what you need when you don’t need to take a lot.

The Talon 44 works for lightweight backpacking (limited to 1-2 nights), while the 33 is specifically designed as a single night backpack. As the styles get smaller, they work best for adventure racing, trail running, cross-country skiing, day hiking and mountain biking.

And finally, at the smallest end is the Talon 4 and 8 waistpacks. These are for bare-bones hikes when you don’t need much more than a poncho, a couple of water bottles and your car keys.

Advantages

Talon Series backpacks are built for comfort, ventilation and high-performance accessibility. With up to six exterior pockets, including two each on the shoulder straps and hipbelt, you should never have trouble getting to small items.

The four backpacks are hydration system compatible, giving you easy, hands-free access to a water reservoir (sold separately).

They also feature reflective elements for high visibility and a blinker patch (blinker sold separately) for nighttime use.

Disadvantages

If you’re going on a long hike, go bigger with a pack like the Osprey Aether 85 or the newer Atmos 65. The bigger Talon Series packs will get you through any all-day activity and some multi-day treks, but they’re not made for hardcore mountaineering or extended excursions.

Also, we think there are other waistpacks on the market better than the Osprey Talon 4 and 8. They’re spacious and good for casual hiking, but nothing too fast-paced. Especially considering the price.

Summary

Priced from $89 to $149, Osprey Talon Series backpacks are a great pickup for the money. In our opinion, if you’re looking for a lightweight day-hike, climbing or adventure sport pack, you can’t really go wrong with the Talon 33 or 44.

At $59 and $69, respectively, the Talon 4 and 8 give you room for two big water bottles, but we’d recommend something by the North Face or CamelBak.

Advantages

Minimalist by design, the Talon 44 is nonetheless loaded with features. It packs easily from the top, has a removable lid and a lower zip pocket for a sleeping bag.

Numerous pockets dot the exterior. You’ll find mesh stretch pockets on the front and side, two on the shoulder pads and on the hipbelt as well, making small items incredibly easy to access. And if you’ve read any of our backpack reviews, you’ll know how much we value internal and external organization. For a small, lightweight backpack, Osprey did this baby right!

In terms of comfort, the perforated mesh shoulder straps are soft and breathable, while the lightweight AirScape™ back panel also helps your body stay cool.

The Biostretch™ harness adjusts to fit torsos of different length, and the compression straps on the sides cinch gear down tight to keep it from shaking around.

Bungee tie-offs, gear loops for ropes or tools, reflective accents and a designated patch for easy attachment of a blinker help to fill out this pack’s rich, versatile design.

Disadvantages

As mentioned, this bag simply doesn’t have the space for longer backpacking trips. If you’re hitting a longer stretch of the Pacific Coast Trail or going back country in Yellowstone, go with something bigger and meatier like the Osprey Aether 85.
