Burton Custom Snowboard: Overview

Along with the Burton Clash snowboard, the Custom is one of the best park-riders to come off the factory floor in a long time. This is a super lightweight board that will twist and turn with the best of them. You can’t find a board with more pop, focus, and response than the Clash for two great reasons:

  • Gondola Package design
  • Super Fly II wood core

The Burton Custom snowboard is definitely suited best for the park, even though it’s categorized as an all-mountain board. There are some drawbacks to its performance once you get up on the mountain, but are they enough to outweigh the amazing benefits you receive in the park?

You’ll have to answer that for yourself, but for our money, we say: NO!

Advantages

You would be very hard-pressed to find a better park-and-pipe board out there. But it’s not just for kicks and tricks–the Custom can go just about everywhere. Pros like Heikki Sorsa and Mads Jonsson head straight for the Custom when looking for a board that will take them right from the pipe to the mountain and back again.

The pro-tip design allows for some fantastic control in the park. It gets rid of a lot of that burdensome swing weight, making it easier for you to complete your rotations and land like a pro.

Disadvantages

Even though the Custom is very similar to the Burton Baron snowboard–the two lines have actually merged in recent years–it’s not a very good pick for riding in powder. The Baron glides smoothly over the stuff, but a regular-sized Custom is just too narrow. Fortunately, though, if powder-riding is your game, there are a few wide Custom models you can choose from.

This is a fantastic park board, but there are some all-mountain elements that it doesn’t hold well with. One, as we just discussed, is powder. Another is ice. The Custom can become very hard to control on hard patches of ice or crust.

Summary

Here’s the deal: this is one of the absolute best all-mountain boards out there, but there are some drawbacks. You have to be careful of the deep powder and the ice–to a degree–when you’re on the mountain. But the Custom’s performance in the park more than evens out those disadvantages. This is a killer board that is a fan favorite among pro riders and it will last you a lifetime. And check out the selection of Wide models if you’re a bigger boarder.
